
In order to report the capture of the Chinese capital Nanjing,the American journalist Steele from Chicago News Daily came to Nanjing in early December,1937.On December 15,together with some other journalists he was taken by the US gunship Oahu for Shanghai,where he telegraphed his report of the Massacre to the Chicago News Daily.He was the first journalist of the news of Nanjing Massacre.

Tillman Durdin,former correspondent of The New York Times,visited the Memorial in June,1988.

The dispatch first reported by Tillman Durdin was published in The New York Tines on December 18, 1937.

On December 28,1937,a Shanghai newspaper carried a London Times report on the Nanjing Massacre:"Streets were covered with the innocent citizens remains.At the city gate along the Yangtze River dead bodies were piled up to a meter high .Trucks and other vehicles were running over the bodies."
