Most family members of this household were humiliated or killed at the time of the Japanese invasion of the city.Among them,three women were raped;three shot dead;a one-year-old baby was thrown to death;two girls(one aged 8,the other 4,Xia Shuqing and Xia Shufen)survived the slaughter.They squatted beside dead relatives,living on little parched rice.Only after their neighbor reported this to the Safety Zone were their lives saved.
